- Abstract
The article focuses on the social conditions of freed blacks in Houston, Texas during the 19th century. The author discusses the laws and legislation that segregated Houston's white and black residents, explores the employment opportunities afforded to freed blacks at the time, and analyzes several lawsuits filed by freed blacks. He also examines the interracial relationships between freed black women and white men.
