- Abstract
One of the biggest advantages in biosignal analyses (e.g., MEG), the high temporal resolution, might at the same time provide a disadvantage when complex and simple tasks are compared directly in event-locked data analysis. Complex and simple tasks can be assumed to recruit partially comparable (e.g., rote memory recall of arithmetic facts) and partially different mental resources (e.g., working memory and mental appliance of arithmetic algorithms). Furthermore, it cannot necessarily be assumed that the same mental sub-processes are active during the same event-locked time windows across experimental trials, especially for the complex tasks. Thus, a direct comparison via difference waves, time frequency plots or comparable timelocked analysis-strategies appear inappropriate for the comparison of tasks showing remarkable differences in complexity. Indeed, the here presented MEG-data showed that there were inter-individual and inter-trial related differences in both response times and spatio-temporal dynamics of source moments at different locations, seeded on the basis of respective fMRI-activation foci. Distributioncharacteristics such as kurtosis and standard deviations varied considerably across different time windows and trials in both delta- and beta-frequency-band-data. The present discussion might stimulate the development of new methodological approaches in biosignal analysis on complex data showing non-linear spatio-temporal dynamics. Both clinical applications and scientific development should benefit from innovations in new data analysis-strategies.
