- Abstract
The article discusses the Chinese revolutionary dance-drama and Peking opera "The Red Detachment of Women" ("Hongse niangzi jun"), particularly the political and social significance of the ballet, which was adapted into a film, to the Cultural Revolution in China. The feature film of the opera, directed by Xie Jin in 1960, is discussed, as is the plot of the film, which centers around a group of women fighters on Hainan Island during the 1930s who work to promote communism by quelling the Nationalist authorities. The setting of the film on the tropical island, the essays and other texts that Xie Jin wrote about the film, authorship during the Cultural Revolution, Jiang Qing, who was the wife of Communist leader Mao Zedong, and the use of the opera as a piece of communist propaganda are also discussed.
