- Abstract
The article develops a general summary measure of multidimensional inequality, which may be applied usefully in a number of areas of research. It describes the attributes and calculation of the measure in the most general terms. The authors clarify the nature of the measure in providing a concrete example of its use. Finally, it provides a summary and discusses further possible applications of the measure. The article discusses the usefulness of the index in efforts to group nations on the basis of similarities in their economic or demographic structures, such as input-output relations or income distribution.
