- Abstract
This article is a special issue of Written Language and Literacy that contains a selection of papers presented at the Association for Written Language and Literacy's thirteenth meeting. The theme of the conference was the systematic nature of writing systems, and it covered a variety of topics such as the relationship between linguistic units and graphematic representations, the factors that influence orthographic systemization, and the interface between writing systems and cognitive factors. The conference included presentations on writing systems from different time periods and regions, and it featured two keynote presentations on non-writing writing and the contribution of suprasegmental information to reading. The special issue includes six papers that closely represent the main topics of the conference, covering subjects such as the taxonomy of writing systems, vowelled phonographic writing systems, the Japanese writing system, koineization and standardization of the Pamphylian alphabet, the innovation of Latin <XS>, and the standardization of spelling in Middle English. The editors express their gratitude to the reviewers and individuals and organizations at the University of North Carolina for their assistance in organizing the conference.
