- Abstract
Malignant pleural mesothelioma is known as an aggressive and resistant tumor originating in serous structures that is caused by long-term persistence of asbestos fibers. Despite strict and preventive measures in the production of asbestos-containing materials, the incidence of malignant pleural mesothelioma has been rising globally. Its incidence in Western Europe had been expected to peak in 2020 but malignant mesothelioma was among many health issues overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Very poor prognosis and rapid progression of the disease call for search for innovative approaches. The course of the disease is significantly improved by several multimodality treatments that should be considered in patients diagnosed with malignant pleural and/or peritoneal mesothelioma. Cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy is a safe approach increasing the median survival of patients. The combination is a potential curative method of choice in a highly selected group of patients with both primary and secondary pleural malignancies.
