- Abstract
The article "Crossbenching, Publics, and their Assemblies" deals with the increasing involvement of architects and urban planners in political and spatial conditions. It emphasizes that spatial practices are political and rooted in relationships between people, things, and structures. Critical spatial practice involves questioning existing practices and protocols and proactively changing reality. It also points out that this practice promotes an alternative and agonistic form of practice that values different approaches and potentially conflicting beliefs in a shared space. The article emphasizes the importance of misunderstandings and the value of failure as a starting point for experiments. It also discusses projects that deal with political assembly and the question of space for politics. The text deals with critical spatial practice and the question of how decision-making processes and spaces can be influenced by design. It argues that the conventional notion of participation and consensus is not sufficient and that a conflict-oriented approach is necessary to bring about change. An alternative model of participation is proposed, based on critical distance and conscious generation of conflict. This model is called "crossbenching" and is intended to provide a basis for critical debates and changes. The text also emphasizes the impact of social media on participation and the need to take this development into account.
