- Abstract
The article presents information on the book "Hong Kong's Transition: A Decade After the Deal," by Gungwu Wang and Siu-Lun Wang. It presents a series of ten lectures, given at the University of Hong Kong, China, from January to April 1994, which focus on the development of Hong Kong during the ten years of transition since the signing of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, which promises the return of Hong Kong to Chinese rule as a Special Administrative Region on July 1, 1997. Papers consider what has gone wrong during the transition; continuity and change in Hong Kong's civil service; the changing role of the common law; Hong Kong's labor productivity growth at national and sectoral levels in comparison with that of other newly industrializing economies of Asia; expectations and challenges in school education; economic interactions between China and Hong Kong; the idea of "one country, two systems"; the mass media and the open society; the transition and unexpected changes; and the implementation of the Joint Declaration.
