- Abstract
The beginning of Ottoman-Austrian relations dates to the first quarter of the 16th century. In this period, the Ottoman Empire, which assumed military superiority, conducted unilateral diplomacy both with Austria and Europe. The Ottoman Empire losing its militarily power gradually in the 18th century, established diplomatic relations with missions to France after the Treaty of Pasarowitz in 1718. The Ottoman Empire forced Austria into a lengthy period of peace with the Treaty of Belgrade in 1739 signed after the wars it had won in the 1730s and with some subsequent agreements. This was also in favor of Austria because of the War of Succession waged. The Treaty of Sistova, signed with Austria in 1791, had special importance as it started a permanent peace process. While following the political turmoil caused by the Ottoman Coalition Wars in Europe, which formed diplomatic representations with great hopes in four major countries, London, Paris, Berlin, and Vienna, the empire was shaken by the French invasion of Egypt in 1798. The distrust created by the Greeks relying upon diplomatic relations, and the rebellion in Morea provided a kind of excuse for Mahmud II to suspend, revise and restructure embassy activities. With the Treaty of Edirne in 1829 and the London Protocol in 1830, the Ottomans wanted to return to western diplomacy, leaving behind the nightmare years. With the suggestions of Metternich, the Ottomans preferred Vienna, which was considered the center of eastern politics, for permanent embassy activities. The contribution and influence of Metternich's policy of maintaining the status quo in Europe were great on this preference.
