- Abstract
African Americans (AA) are disproportionately infected and/or affected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). This study describes the risky sexual behaviors of A A college students and also the relationship of the Neuman Systems Model client system variables (physiological, psychological, sociocultural, developmental, spiritual), interpersonal stressors, and intrapersonal stressors to participation in risky sexual behaviors. A sample of 292 AA college students were surveyed with the mean age of initial sexual intercourse at 16.5 years old. Only slightly more than half used condoms during their last sexual activity. Multivariate logistic regression revealed significant predictors of risky sexual behavior of participating in vaginal sex without using a condom for decreasing spiritual and decreasing intrapersonal (attitude) stressors. These findings provide guidance for advanced practice nurses for developing programming to reduce risky sexual behaviors among AA college students by utilizing spirituality and the influences of intrapersonal attitudes.
