- Title
Paris 1874, Inventing Impressionism.
- Authors
Grau, Donatien
- Abstract
The article discusses an exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris that explores the 1874 Impressionist exhibition, which is considered the founding moment of the Impressionist movement. The exhibition aims to rewrite history by examining the various aspects of the historic event and its context. It analyzes the role of modern life and nature in the exhibited works, as well as the artists' control over language and the naming of their works. The exhibition also expands its reach to the 1877 sequel, deconstructing the iconism of Impressionism. The lead curator, Sylvie Patry, is known for her method of revisiting history in a faithful and groundbreaking way.
