- Abstract
Henry Taylor's exhibition, "From Sugar to Shit," at Hauser & Wirth Paris showcases the artist's beautifully rendered, loose paintings that explore the complexity of African American history. Taylor, a prominent figure in the Los Angeles art scene, is relatively unknown in Paris, despite recent collaborations with Pharrell Williams and Kendrick Lamar. The exhibition features assemblages made with various materials, such as toilet paper rolls and detergent bottles, which serve as visual metaphors for Taylor's eclectic sourcing and interpretation of history, popular culture, and personal experiences. The artworks also make allusions to France's art history and address issues of colonial reparation and racial marginalization. Taylor's paintings capture fleeting moments and emotions with empathy, and his works are emotionally rich, colorful, and metaphorical, revealing the breadth of the human experience.
