- Abstract
Water infiltration into the soil can be defined as the process by which water crosses the surface of the soil. Its speed is variable according to diverse characteristics of the soil and also by the type of use and handling. The objective of this work was to determine the infiltration velocity by the ring infiltrator method, in a Petric Plinthosol in two soil coverages, Cerrado and pasture. The first cover consists of an area of native Cerrado biome, and the second, pasture planted with the species Brachiaria decumbens Stalf. The velocity of infiltration and the water infiltration curve in the soil were obtained by means of an electronic spreadsheet. In both areas, stabilization of soil water infiltration was observed 156 minutes after the test installation. The soil inserted in Cerrado area presented a basic infiltration velocity and a reduced accumulated infiltration in relation to the pasture area. The infiltration rate fell within a high and very high infiltration rate range for Cerrado and pasture respectively.
