- Authors
Daudzai, Ahmad Sayer
- Abstract
This article provides an overview of the current state of the Afghan economy under Taliban rule. Despite the Taliban's claims of effective economic management, key indicators such as GDP, GDP per capita, unemployment, and poverty rates have all worsened. The stability of the Afghan currency is also uncertain, relying heavily on foreign aid and strict controls on currency withdrawals. The Taliban's revenue collection has fallen short, and their control over the mining sector faces challenges. The article also explores the engagement of regional powers like China, Russia, Iran, and Pakistan with the Taliban. It discusses Turkmenistan's use of the TAPI gas pipeline as leverage, Russia's appeasement due to security concerns, and the Taliban's successful leveraging of regional relationships to regain power. The fate of Afghanistan's frozen foreign exchange reserves is examined, with different countries advocating for their release or imposing conditions. The article further examines the impact of the Taliban on Afghanistan's financial system, including restrictions on bank withdrawals and the collapse of the banking sector. It addresses the Taliban's approach to corruption, including nepotism and the misuse of public funds. The article also discusses the Taliban's ban on opium cultivation and the rise of methamphetamine production in Afghanistan. It concludes by discussing how aid is delivered to Afghanistan under the Taliban regime and how it contributes to economic uncertainty.
