- Abstract
Introduction: The use of nutritional supplements has been increasing in Brazil since recent times. Sodium (Na+), may be present in the composition of these and when consumed in excess and over a long period of time, can cause changes in electrolyte balance, and trigger chronic noncommunicable diseases. Objective: To verify the Na+ content from the usual diet and nutritional supplements and to evaluate the food intake of bodybuilders. Materials e Methods: Cross-sectional, quantitative study. It was evaluated the food consumption, with application of the 24-hour food recall. To evaluate the amount of Na+ in nutritional supplements, a rule of three was used, based on the standard amount of Na+ (mg) supplied in a scoop of the specified supplement, using the label of the supplement as a subsidy. Results and discussion: Twenty-two individuals, 13 men and 9 women, were evaluated. The diets presented normocaloric characteristics for men and hypercaloric for women, hyperproteic, normoglicidic and normolipidic for both genders. The mean intake of Na+ from the usual diet was inadequate for men and adequate for women. The mean intake of Na+ supplements was adequate for both sexes. Conclusion: Inadequate consumption of calories for females and adequate for males was evidenced. High protein intake and adequate consumption of carbohydrates and lipids for both genders. Na + from the usual diets was inadequate for males and adequate for females. Na+ derived from the use of supplements was adequate for both sexes.
