- Abstract
Introduction: The development of the infant is a dynamic process, which expresses the gradual change of skills without control of the different domains as the child grows. Its progression is related to the integrity of the sensory systems and expansion in the interaction with the offerings of the environment. The initial signs of psychomotor delay are nonspecific, and impairment in any of the sensory inputs can be expressed by atypical motor development. Vision is one of the main sensory inputs for sensory motor utilization, and strabismus and amblyopia stand out among the visual impairments associated with delay. The objective study describes the initial psychomotor development of four full-term infants with congenital strabismus. Case description: Four cross-eyed boys, between four and eighteen months of age, were assessed using the Alberta Infant Motor Scale and the Denver II Screening Test at three different ages, with 86 ± 34 days between evaluations. All children performed unfavorably on one or more assessments carried out with both tests used to assess development. Discussion: Children with congenital strabismus, without a diagnosis of neuromotor abnormalities, may have developmental delay. Unfavorable results in development in strabismus can result from the poor development of binocular vision, which impairs spatial and depth perceptions and can interfere with motor results. Making instrumented developmental comments in infants with strabismus can be an important tool in this monitoring, in order to favor the intervention and minimize the child's future repercussions.
