- Abstract
Post-operative pain (POP) is common and plays a significant role in the physiological, functional and emotional status of patients who have undergone surgery. The transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) is used as a resource in the Multimodal Therapy, which is a low-cost, non-invasive analgesic method with minor side effects. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of TENS in reduc pain in patients who have undergone thoracoabdominal surgery (TAS). This is an integrative review of the literature, conducted in the Publisher Medline (Pubmed) and Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) databases. We considered clinical studies that discuss the use of TENS in pain management in the postoperative period (POP) of thoracoabdominal surgery (TAS). It was observed that, in most studies, there are reports of pain reduction in the postoperative period and subsequent decrease in the use of medical drugs, which indicate lower costs and shorter hospital stays as it provides a better cost-benefit ratio. The use of TENS in patients who have undergone TAS has proven to be effective in reducing pain in the postoperative period. The 80 Hz frequency range was identified as the most frequently used one, with pulse width of 150 µs, minimum application time of 30 minutes and maximum intensity possible without generating muscle contraction or discomfort, as well as electrodes applied laterally to the surgical scar at 3 cm being this associated use with reduction of pain.
