- Abstract
The article examines how the notions of race inform the sculptures of Congolese natives made by Herbert Ward. The salon artist has lived and worked in the Congo Free State from 1884 to 1889. The European artist was also an author and lecturer. It describes the similarities of Ward's sculptures with illustrations in publications on ethnology and the colonies. It discusses how the theory of arrested development in scientific anthropology informed Ward's sculpture entitled "The Fugitives." It explores how Ward's sculptures reveal Ward's outlook on debates about colonialism in Central Africa.
