- Abstract
The article explores the history of Yanagi Sôetsu, the leader of the folk crafts movement, concerning his creativity in forming Mingei Theory in Japan. The aesthetic theory of the movement emphasized the beauty of hand-made folk crafts, made by unknown craftsmen working in groups to support their daily needs. During the period of the formation of Mingei Theory, Sôetsu had developed an initial interest in crafts, highly inspired by Leach and Tomimeto with their knowledge of aesthetics developed by Morris, Ruskin, and the Arts and Crafts movement. It suggests that the Mingei movement needs to be seen in its social and historical context as a natural product of Japanese modernization.
