- Abstract
Evaluation of static p‐y approaches for laterally loaded piles in soft clay When it comes to the general design of laterally loaded piles, the p‐y approach according to the offshore guidelines is commonly used. The here stated p‐y curves for soft clay are based on an exponential approach by Matlock, whereby different linearisations are recommended by the guidelines of the API and the DNVGL. Various experimental and numerical investigations demonstrate, however, considerable inadequacies of the stated basic function in particular with respect to the suitability for large‐diameter piles. As a result of these investigations, several alternative p‐y approaches were developed which explicitly intend to account for the effect of the large pile diameter. The paper in‐hand contains an extensive evaluation of overall six static p‐y approaches for soft clay based on more than 300 three‐dimensional simulations with the finite element method. The results indicate that the p‐y approach according to Matlock, the linearisations by the API and the DNVGL as well as three alternative approaches are not generally valid for arbitrary soil conditions and pile geometries. The findings from the investigation are finally used for the definition of requirements regarding a new, generally valid p‐y approach.
