- Abstract
The article discusses the role of art history in early conceptualizations of Palaeolithic art along with reception of Palaeolithic art at the turn of the twentieth century. Topics discussed include beginning of the what was known as the primitive art movement in the nineteenth century, role played by art-historical theories in explanations concerning the origins and evolution of Palaeolithic figurative and abstract representations, and terms borrowed by scholars of prehistoric art from art historians.
