- Abstract
In continental Europe, France has a long tradition of stratification in higher education (HE) that is strongly linked to a spatial distribution structure. Preferences for certain higher education institutions require some willingness for spatial distance on the part of the students, as institutions are differently located and stratified in France. Theory assumes that students from higher social classes and students with higher school degrees are more likely to study further away from their hometown. Using data by Conditions de vie des étudiants 1994 – 2010, this assumption is confirmed for students originating from highly educated families and for those with higher personal educational capital. Parental income has a low impact which reveals that money plays a minor role in France when education is controlled for. The paper concludes that the choosing of more distant HE institutions by higher social groups has effects on institutional differentiation as well.
