- Abstract
Based on longitudinal data from 2149 students, this article addresses the effects of all-day schooling in primary schools. Accounting for the students' prior achievements and their family contexts, the article investigates whether taking part in science related extra-curricular activities has a supportive effect on the development of students' competencies in natural science and their self-concept in relation to the subject ‘Sachunterricht' (an interdisciplinary subject which includes contents of different natural science domains; Ohle, Boone & Fischer, 2014) from grade three to four. The analysis reveals that taking part in natural science-related extra-curricular activities neither affects the development of scientific competencies nor the development of self-concept. Even extra curricular activities that are rated to be of higher quality do not support the development of scientific competencies. However, the study indicates that higher quality extra-curricular activities positively affect the subject-related self-concept of students from socially deprived family contexts.
