- Abstract
Every technological development affects political communication phenomenon and practices. In this respect usage and effectiveness of social media is increasing day by day, so finding out the connection of new media and political communication is crucial. Particularly social media, referring to web 2.0 era, has become a political communication medium used in political campaign terms. In this study, politicians' usage of Twitter in 2014 local elections as a social media platform which comes to the fore with individual usages have been examined. Four parliament parties' metropolitan municipality candidates' Twitter usages has been analyzed comparatively by using content analysis methodology. This politicians possession of accounts in this mediums may indicate that there is an awareness in his mediums regard to political communication. However, mutual interaction which represents the differential aspect of new media and the structure which enables the dialog were not been effectively used by politicians. Monological communication practices of traditional media have been transported to new media and politicians used this medium for one-way information sharing instead of developing an efficient dialog with voters. Hence, as validated by the findings, they produced contents in this area with the aims of sharing information and putting forward the practices affirming him. Thereby according to conclusions of this study conducted concerning 2014 local elections, the gap between politicians and citizens in the political campaign process has been preserved to an extent.
