- Abstract
This article discusses banning smoking in taverns and restaurants as a research opportunity as well as a gain for public health. In jurisdiction after jurisdiction, bans on cigarette smoking in pubs, bars and restaurants are coming into effect. The bans on smoking are an unusual opportunity not only for studies of policy impact, but also for studies at the individual level of the interconnections of these behaviors. To ban smoking in a bar or other drinking-place potentially has a number of effects on smoking and on drinking among those who are regular smokers and bar drinkers. Bans on cigarette smoking in drinking places are an important public health initiative, but they are also a unique research opportunity. It should be seized not only by tobacco researchers, but also by those studying gambling and alcohol, and those interested in how strong habits interact.
