- Title
Understanding Epideictic Purpose as Invitational Rhetoric in Women's Political Convention Speeches.
- Authors
Petre, Elizabeth A.
- Abstract
This essay extends Foss, Griffin, and Foss's conception of invitational rhetoric by considering how it becomes manifest in the epideictic purpose. Speeches made by eight prominent women at the 2004 Democratic and Republican national political conventions offer their perspectives as a way to connect with audience members. Linking epideictic purpose to invitational rhetoric advances rhetorical theory and our understanding of women's political rhetoric.
