Phenakiscope: 19th century science turned to animation.
- Authors
Leskosky, Richard J.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the contributions of phenakistoscope in the 19th century pre-history of the cinema. It states that phenakistoscope is the first pre-cinematic device to create the illusion of moving pictures. It recalls that through the phenakistoscope device dozen of images arranged around a disc allowed for a smoother depiction of an action and afforded more space and time for other sorts of illusions including forced perspective and progressive changes in shading. There are two major problems of the phenokistoscope claimed by Thomas Ross which include mirror version, and phenakistoscope illusion heretofore was viewable only by one person at a time.
