- Abstract
The article discusses the ongoing struggle for reproductive rights and the debates surrounding abortion. Worldwide, around 47,000 women die each year due to improperly performed abortions. While some countries have legalized the right to abortion, restrictive abortion laws have been introduced in Poland and Texas. In Germany, there are still bans, restrictions, and stigmatization regarding abortions, although there are no longer any convictions of women. The debate about § 219a of the German Criminal Code, which regulates the advertising ban for abortions, is also mentioned. Justice Minister Marco Buschmann has presented a draft bill to repeal this paragraph. The federal government supports a joint project to document the experiences and situations of unintentionally pregnant women. The repeal of § 219a of the German Criminal Code is intended to improve the situation for unintentionally pregnant women and doctors. However, there are still restrictions on the right to self-determination for unintentionally pregnant women, such as the information ban. The debate about abortions can be seen as a socio-political problem, an ethical issue, or a constitutional question. The medical care for unintentionally pregnant women is insufficient, and there are obstacles to performing abortions. Improvement in the provision of care is not to be expected without decriminalization and an evidence- and human rights-based regulation. It is hoped that the protests and actions surrounding the 150th anniversary of the paragraph have led to a strengthening of civil society forces that continue to demand the right to abortion.
