- Abstract
The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, was enacted in 2010 to expand access to affordable healthcare in the United States. It aimed to increase insurance coverage through measures such as Medicaid expansion and the establishment of health insurance marketplaces. The marketplaces provide a centralized and transparent place for individuals to compare and purchase health insurance plans, with subsidies available to make coverage more affordable. The ACA has led to increased stability in the marketplaces, with more insurers participating and premiums stabilizing. However, challenges remain in terms of affordability and enrollment. The New York marketplace is highlighted as a successful model, and the use of health reimbursement arrangements and their impact on small employers is discussed. The ACA marketplaces have also had positive effects on entrepreneurship by providing affordable coverage options. Overall, while progress has been made, there are ongoing challenges in achieving a fully stable and accessible healthcare marketplace.
