- Abstract
This article discusses the financial relationships between professional medical societies (PMSs) and pharmaceutical companies in Japan. The study analyzed publicly disclosed payment data from all member companies of the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (JPMA) to evaluate these relationships. The results showed that all 19 PMSs received payments from pharmaceutical companies, totaling $49,358,610 between 2017 and 2020. The majority of these payments were provided for expenses related to cosponsored conferences and seminars. The study raises concerns about the independence of PMSs and potential industry influence on their activities. However, the study has limitations, including possible inaccuracies in the payment data and under-reporting of payments. The data used in the study is available from a publicly accessible online database.
