- Abstract
Coronary angioplasty is an invasive procedure used in the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD). Nurses need to understand the rationale for this treatment option as well as the risks so that they can prepare a patient psychologically for their procedure, look after them safely afterwards and facilitate ongoing secondary prevention. This article reviews coronary angioplasty as a treatment option, presents the complications of angioplasty and discusses key aspects of nursing care. The use of vascular access devices and different types of stents is discussed, along with pharmacology, discharge advice and cardiac rehabilitation, all of which are key aspects of this patient pathway.
