- Abstract
Football has become an increasingly intense sport with a tight schedule of training and matches, all of which can consequently lead to a greater injury incidence. The associations between training and competition loads, lower limb strength and injury has not yet been fully elucidated, thus, the aim of our study was to examine the relationship between lower limb muscle strength and the incidence of lower limb injuries. This cross-sectional study included 22 professional football players of the NK Olimpija senior team, age, 24 ± 4 years old, height, 180 ± 7 cm tall and weight, 75 ± 7 kg. We measured the maximum isometric strength of knee flexors and extensors, and strength endurance of knee flexors. We used injury questionnaire to identify characteristics of lower limb injuries. A total of 27 injuries were identified, with the highest incidence obtained on ankle (37.03%) and knee (26.63%). No differences in the maximum strength of the knee extensors and flexors were found between injured and uninjured football players. Similarly, there were no differences in injury rates between players with larger and smaller inter-muscle and intra-muscle ratios. In our study, there was no associations between lower limb strength and injury incidence. In future training process, more emphasis should be given on regular monitoring of the players for an early identification of new potential risk factors for the injury occurrence of the lower limbs.
