- Abstract
The article examines rising modern day maritime piracy off the coast of Somalia. It reflects on causes of piracy in Somalia including nonexistent governance, illegal fishing and dumping, and economic incentives created by piracy. It discusses the barriers in prosecuting maritime piracy and describes lack of legal jurisdiction, inadequate laws, and the costs associated with trials in this regard. It analyzes the available solutions to this problem.
