Abstract
The article presents an edited version of the speech by John Gieve, Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, delivered at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations in New Delhi, India, on February 20, 2006. He discusses the evolution of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), whether there is a need for an international monetary institution, and suggestions on how the IMF should be reformed.
