- Abstract
Gender analysis of the composition of the committee to work out the Strategic Plan for 2002 - 2012 in the University of Benin, Nigeria, was carried out in order to determine if gender balance was considered. Results showed that males were predominant in the main committee as well as in the seven subcommittees. The main committee had 20 males and 1 female. Only one of the subcommittees (Gender Issues) was headed by a woman. A major criterion that seemed to have been used in appointing members was academic rank, which did not favour women. The Gender Issues Subcommittee was the only one where women were conspicuously well represented. Statistical analysis showed significant differences in percentages of males and females (p =0.05) in the various sub-committees. Factors that might have given rise to this inequity and its implication for gender and realization and sustainability of the set goals of the strategic plan are discussed.
