- Abstract
Traditional Islamic perception of sexuality is being transformed by modernity and feminism taking place in Indonesia, especially in a modern Islamic boarding school called pesantren. These changes are particularly directed to influence personal sexual experience of female students. This paper discusses the complex relationship between Islamic conservative teaching and modernity which is disseminated by media and gender equality movements. Applying feminist ethnographic approach in with six months full participation in daily life in Pesantren, interviewing 13 in-depth interviews of female students aged 15-25, with informal interviews of hundred female and male students to get a broader picture of issue of students in negotiating and resisting contesting values of being good woman in contemporary Islamic society in Indonesia. The findings demonstrate women's agency in creating a space for making autonomous decision about their bodies. Finally, the paper argues that integrating sexual and reproductive health rights' issue in schools' curricula, improving access of information on sexual and reproductive health in schools and Pesantren is urgently needed to reduce constraints on the ability of young people to make choices when they act upon their sexual desires and feelings.
