The article emphasizes three aspects of the renewal of the transition debate. It discusses the range of theoretical issues which influence such a discussion, and the salience of four alternative "orientations" to the transition question and to historical research generally. The article examines the different levels of abstraction involved in the Marxist theory of history and some of the key questions pertaining to each.
