- Authors
Hubbs, Nadine
- Abstract
An essay is presented on the concept of the Redneck Woman in Southern U.S. culture. It analyzes the roles of class and gender in country music. Particular focus is given to the song "Redneck Woman" by performer Gretchen Wilson. According to the author, the song expresses defiance of middle-class ideals of womanhood and maintains its feminist message while affirming southern working-class masculinity. The so-called Virile Female archetype of southern women is also discussed.
