- Abstract
Tracheobronchial injury (TBI) is an uncommon and potentially life-threatening injury, but very little data are available to guide the management of the same. TBI due to blunt or penetrating trauma is rare and most individuals succumb to asphyxiation from airway obstruction or tension pneumothorax even before reaching the hospital. We present the case of a 25-year-old male who was brought to the emergency room with a history of blunt trauma to the anterior neck, leading to swelling and pain at the site of injury associated with progressive loss of speech and worsening dyspnoea. Gradually, increasing neck swelling along with progressive loss of phonation and worsening dyspnoea forced us to consider a tracheal injury in this patient. We discuss the sequence of events that lead to the occurrence of tracheal injury, and the prompt diagnosis and efficient management which are the cornerstones in saving the patient's life.
