- Abstract
Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MVD) is more frequent in the cavalier King Charles spaniel (CKCS) than in other breeds. The primary goal of this study was to gather information on contemporary breeding programs that breeders use and what veterinarians deem important to include in a breeding program. The second goal of this study was to identify points of improvement in the current breeding protocol and to propose possible adaptations based on a literature study. This study was performed by the distribution of surveys to companion animal veterinarians and breeders from Belgium. The results show that 44/60 veterinarians use cardiac auscultation as the first step to diagnose MVD and 51/60 also recommend echocardiography. Radiography of the thorax is used by 25/60 veterinarians. Surveyed veterinarians mainly confirm the known epidemiology of MVD in the CKCS. According to 53/60 veterinarians, CKCS are younger than other breeds when a heart murmur is diagnosed. These results suggest that the combination of cardiac auscultation and echocardiography plays an important role in the breeding protocol. According to eleven of the fifteen questioned breeders, MVD is the most common disorder in CKCS seen in their practice, and therefore, they are willing to follow a breeding protocol.
