- Abstract
People were never indifferent to crocodiles. Depending on the time and place, these animals were either revered or despised. In ancient Egypt, crocodiles (Crocodilus niloticus) were feared and even sacralized (God Sobek). Therefore, in some temples, they were held in captivity, sometimes in magnificently tiled and decorated pools. Today many crocodile species are threatened with extinction. Thus, they are kept in captivity in zoos and farms for different purposes (conservation, meat and leather production). Alligator mississipiensis, Alligator sinensis, Caiman crocodilus, Paleosuchus palpebrosus, Paleosuchus trigonatus, Crocodylus siamensis, Crocodylus porosus, and Osteoloemus tetraspis are some of the most common species in human care. This article deals with the characteristics of the crocodile as a zoo animal and provide information to exhibit size and design, heating and thermoregulation requirements, lighting, water quality as well as diet and feeding; important factors which are considered critical to keep these animals in healthy conditions. An example for outdoor housing of Crocodylus siamensis and C. porosus at the Samut Prakan crocodile farm (in Thailand) is described in detail. Furthermore, a table summarizing the experiences of several European zoological institutions in housing and feeding different species in captivity is included.
