- Authors
Cohen, Patricia Cline
- Abstract
The second participant in a roundtable discussion of generational difference in approaches to Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's 'A Midwife's Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard, Based on Her Diary, 1785-1812' (1991) at the October 2001 meeting of the Organization of American Historians provides the perspective of a colleague. The author first describes the obstacles facing Ulrich's project - primarily that its subject was an unknown midwife from Maine - and then explains how Ulrich overcame these obstacles by creating an original piece of scholarship that wrote community history from the vantage point of one woman in that community. Last, she explains the success of 'A Midwife's Tale' in terms of its appeal to three audiences beyond scholars in women's history: early American historians, undergraduate students, and the general public.
