- Abstract
The largest assemblage of Italian ceramics excavated in Britain comes from south-west England, notably from the port of Plymouth. The paper discusses the range of wares represented and their dating, drawing attention to a number of types of maiolica which have not previously been published from sites in Britain. It proposes that a high proportion of the finds belong to the years c. 1570-1630, reflecting the emergence of a distinctive economy in the south Devon ports, based principally on the boom in the fish trade, supplemented by exports of tin and cloth. Rather than being an indicator of high status, the Italian pottery is seen principally as a reflection of the emergence of a progressive material culture in the mariner communities of ports.
