Introduction. Hayao Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon are two of the most critically and popularly acclaimed directors in the contemporary anime genre. Despite their different styles, they coincide in that both of them tend to star women in most of their filmography. Objective. This study quantitatively analyses the popularity of these female characters in Google searches from 2004 to 2021. Methodology. Based on this data, we will carry out a qualitative analysis of the narrative evolution and aesthetic treatment of each of these characters. Results and conclusions. We conclude that the characters who experience a transition from innocence to a first maturity were the most popular among the fans of these films: Spirited Away (29.95) and My Neighbor Totoro (25.01). Also, the childlike appearance of anime heroines was more popular than the adult-looking ones.
