- Abstract
The article presents an historical overview of the Baptist denomination and its advocacy for freedoms of speech and religion. Details are given highlighting several figures and issues championed by the Baptists concerning the need for separation of church and state. Examples given include the English Baptist Thomas Helwys In 1611 issuing calls for freedom of conscience and demands for government non-interference in religion, Baptist leader Helen Barrett Montgomery in 1921 advocating complete separation of church and state in the U.S., and the religious views of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes in securing First Amendment freedoms in constitutional law.
