- Title
Organizing God's Children: The Denominational Tradition and the Problem of Black Baptist Unity.
- Authors
Dixie, Quinton
- Abstract
The article discusses African American Baptist community and the extent to which African American denominations, especially the National Baptist Convention (NBC), differ from white denominational organizations. This understanding of denominationalism stands in contrast to the nonchurchly understanding, which holds that God's primary interest is in individual Christians. In order to make sense of this investigation of nineteenth-century African American Baptists, the author provides working definitions of some key terms related to his analysis of the NBC.
