- Abstract
Purpose: It is known that anti-TNF therapy is given to patients with persistently high diseases activity despite conventional treatments according to the ASAS recommendations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between quality of life and functionality in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) who are decided to receive anti-tnf treatment. Methods: 53 AS patients who are decided to receive anti-tnf treatment (32 women, 21 men, mean age: 40.85 ±10.8 years) were included in the study. Socio-demographic informations of individuals were recorded (Table 1). The Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI) was used to assess functional status and the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and SF-36 were used to determine quality of life. The data obtained from 53 patients were analyzed by correlation analysis. Results: A statistically significant, very strong correlation was found between the BASFI and HAQ scores in the positive direction (r=0.72, p<0.001). While there was a statistically significant negative moderately strong correlation between BASFI score and Short Form-36 subscores such as physical function, bodily pain, general mental health and vitality ; there was a statistically significant negative low-moderate correlation with general health perception subscale of Short Form-36 (respectively r=-0.57, r= -0.47, r= -0.46, r= -0.46, r= -0.33) (Table2). There were no correlation in other subscores of SF-36 such as physical role limitation, emotional role limitation and social functioning. Conclusion: It is determined that ankylosing spondylitis patients who are decided to receive anti-tnf treatment had low functional level and low levels in quality of life subscores such as mental health, pain, physical function and fatique. However, emotional status of this patients are not reflect on their functional roles and participation of social life.
