- Abstract
The carbon stored in radical biomass of Morella Pubescens (H. & B. ex Willd.) Wilbur was quantified in San Pablo, Nariño, Colombia, at 2010 m altitude, average annual rainfall of 1300 mm, and average temperature of 17°C. Three different experimental units were evaluated; silvopastoral system, pasture alley cropping (Ac) in two planting distances: 4x3 m and 4x4 m, and natural regeneration system (Rn). Seven individuals were taken per experimental unit (diameters 5 - 7 cm), the sample was taken at 70 cm and 140 cm from the tree at three different depths (0-15, 15-30, and 30-45 cm). A total of 24 samples per tree was taken in 21 selected individuals. The highest quantity of radical biomass and C stock was present in the Ac arrangement 4x3 m with 27.6 t.ha-1 (14.1 t.C.ha-1), followed by the Ac arrangement 4x4 m, 24.4 t.ha-1 (12.1 t.C.ha-1), and by 7.5 t.ha-1 (2.9 t.ha-1) in natural regeneration. Taking into account that there were no significant differences in stored C per tree in system Ac arrangement 4x4 m, compared to Rn, and there was a decrease of C at 4x3 m in Ac arrangement, the differences between the systems may be due to sowing density.
