- Abstract
In this study, stratified Cox proportional hazards model, which is a conditional risk set model, is applied to determine the factors that are important to reach the semi-final round in the FIFA Men's World Cup finals for the national teams participating in the last six FIFA Men's World Cup finals organized between 1998 and 2018. The national team of the host country is about three quarters less likely to be eliminated from the tournament than the national team of a visiting country. Similarly, national teams of countries located on the same continent as the host country have an advantage over national teams of contries from other continents. The population of the country, one of the two most important factors affecting the number of medals won in the Olympic Games, is also a factor that positively affects the success in the top level organization of football.
