- Abstract
The article informs that Renibacterium salmoninarum, the causative agent of bacterial kidney disease (BKD), causes mortality in salmonid fish cultured in fresh water. Limited information is available concerning the fate of infected fish after migration from fresh to salt water. Considering the chronic nature of BKD infections and that migration to salt water does not ameliorate the disease process, it is likely that some fish infected with R. salmoninarum die from BKD while in the open ocean. It appears that the disease progresses throughout the life of the fish, so at any given time there should be those in the population that are dying from BKD.
